a year following the initiation of a study into unexplained sightings.
The space agency broadcasted the lengthy hearing on Wednesday, which featured an independent panel of specialists. The group consists of 16 scientists and other experts chosen by NASA, including retired astronaut Scott Kelly, who was the first American to spend nearly a year in space.
Several committee members have faced “online harassment” for their participation, which detracts from the scientific process, stated NASA’s Dan Evans, mentioning that NASA security is addressing the issue.
“It’s this rigorous, evidence-based approach that distinguishes fact from fiction,” Evans remarked.
The ongoing study aimed at unraveling mysterious aerial sightings, which NASA refers to as UAPs, or unidentified aerial phenomena.
The panel is examining the available unclassified information on the topic and assessing the additional data required to comprehend current aerial events, according to astrophysicist David Spergel, the committee’s chair who leads the Simons Foundation.
No sensitive military information is included, such as data regarding the suspected spy balloons from China that were observed over the U.S. earlier this year.
The meeting took place at NASA’s headquarters in Washington, with remote public participation.
A final report is slated for release by the end of July.
